All you need to know about Sterilized Body Jewelry.

We have gathered all the information regarding sterilized body jewelry for you. Since this is a complex and often misunderstood aspect of body jewelry, we have tried our best to organize all available information and combine it into a single article for our customers.

Different Types of Sterilization

Sterilization refers to the act of eliminating any biological contamination of an object. This means that once sterilization is complete, no traces of microorganisms should be left on the object. Many different approaches are used to achieve this, but only two are typically used for body jewelry.

  1. Sterilization by autoclave. This type of sterilization uses heat to kill any microorganisms, such as bacteria, on the surface of the jewelry. The standard for this is to use a closed vessel and subject the piece of jewelry to an atmosphere of superheated steam with a temperature of between 121°C - 134°C (250–273 °F) for a specific time period, which will depend on the type of item and its packaging. This method is the oldest sterilization method and does not require any expensive equipment. However, its main disadvantage is that the high heat can damage certain types of jewelry, and generally, jewelry sterilized by autoclave will remain sterilized for a maximum of one year only. This makes this method the preferred choice for piercing studios who prefer to sterilize their body jewelry and their piercing equipment themselves.
  2. Sterilization by EO Gas stands for Ethylene oxide gas sterilization. This method uses exposure to EO Gas, which is highly toxic to microorganisms, to eliminate all biological contamination of an object. This method requires large equipment and is a tightly controlled, highly regulated process. But it yields the best results. And since it does not require exposing the items to extremely high heat, it is suitable for all types of body jewelry except silver jewelry, which will tarnish when coming in contact with EO gas. Currently, EO gas sterilization is the standard method for sterilizing medical equipment in healthcare facilities all over the world, and products sterilized in this way will remain sterilized for up to 5 years. This extended shelf life, combined with the extensive range of jewelry it is suitable for, makes this method the best choice for sterilized body jewelry.

Legal Aspect of Sterilized Body Jewelry.

Before purchasing pre-sterilized body jewelry for your piercing studio, we strongly suggest you check the applicable requirements with your local health authorities. In some countries, pre-sterilized body jewelry is completely prohibited as initial jewelry, and all piercing studios must sterilize their body jewelry in their own promises. Then, in some countries, pre-sterilized body jewelry is allowed, but piercing studios that use them must ensure that they comply with stringent regulations and maintain complete documentation of all sterilization certificates for each piece of jewelry. And then, finally, in some countries, there are no regulations whatsoever about pre-sterilized body jewelry. Here, you have a simple checklist to verify what you must follow with your local health authorities.

    • Are Piercers allowed to use pre-sterilized body jewelry for initial piercings?
    • What information must be on each individual package? (For Example, Lot Number, Expiry date)
    • Is the sterilized body jewelry package required to have the information stamped permanently on it?
    • What certificate for pre-sterilized body jewelry must a piercing studio show during an inspection from health authorities?
    • If certificates are required, what are the information which must be stated in those certificates?
    • Is it necessary to have certificates for each individual who produces a lot of sterilized body jewelry?
    • How must sterilized body jewelry be stored in your shop?
    • Do you have to keep a record of which piece of sterilized body jewelry you used for each individual customer?

Reasons for using pre-sterilized body jewelry in your piercing studio

Using pre-sterilized body jewelry in your piercing studio instead of using a small autoclave to carry out the sterilization process yourself has many advantages. Some might be obvious, but others might surprise you. The main advantage is the significant time savings you will enjoy because you no longer must carry out the sterilization process yourself. If you are working alone in your studio, this will allow you to spend more time with customers offering your services and allocating more time to actual piercing appointments. Of course, if you have employees, using pre-sterilized body jewelry means your employees can spend more time on things that generate income for you. Also, it's one less task you must supervise your employees and train them to do it right. This point alone will increase the profitability of your piercing studio already. The next significant advantage comes from the longer shelf life of EO gas-sterilized body Jewelry. Since this process is not suitable for piercing studios, they are forced to use Autoclave sterilization. And the one-year shelf life, which is the norm with autoclave sterilized body jewelry, passes relatively quickly, and your studio might end up with “expired” sterilized body jewelry. This means you must repeat the entire process again, losing your investment in the first sterilization. On the other hand, EO Gas sterilization will keep your jewelry sterile for five years, and you should have no problem using any EO gas pre-sterilized body jewelry within that time frame. The other significant advantage is reliability. EO gas sterilization carried out by health care providers in specialized sterilization facilities is a highly controlled process with multiple levels of quality assurance. This means you can be sure that the sterilized body jewelry you buy from our company is completely safe to use. Even if you have the best intentions when performing the autoclave sterilization yourself, you simply cannot come close to the quality assurance of an EO gas sterilization carried out in a health care facility.

How to sterilize body jewelry at home

Many piercing enthusiasts ask this question, and we have spoken to a few medical professionals to hear what choices consumers have regarding sterilizing their body jewelry at home. The below methods should not be used commercially under any circumstances and are best reserved for body jewelry consumers have worn themselves already and now want to reuse them again for themselves after some time of storage.

    1. Sterilization by alcohol submersion. If you have medical-grade alcohol for wound disinfection at home, you can use it to disinfect your jewelry. Pour some of it into a small cup and then submerge the jewelry inside for at least one minute. Use this time to wash your hands and the location of the piercing with water and soap. After this, do not touch anything else. Proceed to take the jewelry out of the cup and immediately insert it into the piercing. This method is suitable for all types of metal jewelry, including those that contain crystals or cubic zirconia, but should not be used for acrylic or BioFlex.
    2. Sterilization by boiling. If your jewelry is made of metal and does not contain any crystals, you can also disinfect it with boiling water. For this, place a pot with clean water on the stove and bring it to a boil. After that, put your jewelry in the boiling water for 5 minutes. After that, with clean hands, use a large spoon to remove the jewelry from the water and wait until it cools down. Then, you should immediately place it in the piercing.
